R v VON EINEM 1984 - 'Abbreviated' Deane William Cooper XN
Q. In the first half of 1983 I think you became involved with the commercial hotel industry.
A. Yes.
Q. I think at the time you had something to do with the Royal Oak Hotel.
A. I leased the kitchen in both hotels.
Q. We go back to the 4th of June 1983. Did you work at the Royal Oak Hotel that night?
A. Yes, at 6 p.m.
Q. During the course of the evening ddi you see a person that you knew in the bar of the hotel?
A. Yes.
Q. Do you see that person in court today?
A. Yes.
Q. Could you please point him out to the jury.
A. Yes.
Q. What time was that?
A. Around 8 p.m.
Q. Was he alone or not?
A. Yes, he was just sitting at the bar having a butcher of beer.
Q. Had you met the accused prior to that night?
A. Once before. It was 18 months ago in January or February at the City Hotel one night.
Q. Were you introduced to him?
A. Yes.
Q. On 4 June Saturday at the Royal Oak Hotel, did you speak to him?
A. No. But I gave him a nod.
Q. Did he acknowledge and nodded back?
A. Yes.
Q. Did you see him again later that same evening?
A. Yes. It would have been just after 8 p.m. I was in the supermarket next door.
Q. Where did you see Mr Von Einem?
A. I was just coming out of the grocery department and he was just standing in the aisle by the chemist shop.
Q. The chemist shop is part of the supermarket?
A. Yes.
Q. Did you talk to him?
A. Only a bit, for about a minute.
Q. Was there any mention that you had meet before?
A. Yes, he just asked me where he knew me from. I said I was a friend of a certain person and he said ‘Oh yes’.
Q. How does the accused’s appearance compare to today with the 4th of June 1983?
A. He has changed a lot. I wouldn’t recognise him. He had dark hair and he has put on a lot of weight.
Q. Do you know if the pharmacy in that supermarket complex is Ramsey’s Pharmacy?
A. It could be.
