Why did Mr B lie about the day he picked up Barnes?

  • Alan went missing on a Sunday afternoon on Grand Junction Rd.

Mr B claimed he was with Bevan and picked up Barnes the following Friday night in the Northern Parklands (near start of Main North Rd).

Alan was killed on the Friday Mr B claimed they picked him up.

Mr B then said he went to a nightclub on North Tce.

There's no way Alan went missing for 5 days and then was picked up by BVE. He was seen approaching a car on the Sunday. If Mr B was not in the car with Bevan, then why say anything at all? If he was in the car, then he must have some understanding as to where Alan was kept for 5 days.

What's the purpose of the lie?

Maybe Alan was kept at Mr B’s home and there was no way to weasel out of being guilty if he told police that. So he put himself with Barnes only on the very last day, probably in case there was any trace evidence linking back to him, and depicted himself as an “innocent” bystander who left before things got dirty.
